Former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen criticized the presidential debate moderators and President Biden for avoiding comment on former President Trump’s conviction.
Cohen discussed Biden’s performance with MSNBC’s Ali Velshi on Saturday. He argued that Biden should have talked about Trump’s conviction immediately.
“In this debate, he allowed Donald to be very comfortable. In fact, they didn’t talk about the 34 criminal convictions until 45 minutes into the 90-minute debate,” Cohen said. “I would have walked out right then and there and started talking about his criminal convictions.”
The former president made history in May when he became the first U.S. president to be convicted of a crime. A jury found him guilty on all 34 felony counts brought against him in his hush money case, in which Cohen was a key witness.
Cohen, a former Trump ally, has since broken with the former president and supported Biden’s re-election effort. He argued that Biden should have started talking about the COVID-19 pandemic, Roe v. Wade, climate change “and everything in between” to get Trump out of the game.
Cohen said Biden should have said, “You’re not going to hear one truth in this entire debate,” and added, “I hope he remembers that when he answers this question.”
A former Trump lawyer said Biden should have told his company he should run against a “twice-impeached, four-time indicted criminal” who bankrupted the company multiple times.
“It’s also not just what you say that matters, but how you say it,” Cohen said. “If you want to get to Donald Trump, you have to say it a certain way. That’s what Joe Biden had to do.”
All in all, Biden’s poor performance stole the show. His tired attitude has sent Democrats into a panic, with calls for him to step down and for the party to find someone new to take on Trump.
Despite calls for his resignation, many people still support the president and his goal of re-election. Cohen is one of them. He acknowledged Biden may have been tired since the debate began at 9 p.m.
“While Trump was wondering what to eat for breakfast on the day of the debate or which golf course he wanted to play at that day, Joe Biden was still running the country and was tired. Cohen later added: “Maybe they should have given him some downtime, because the world is a bit chaotic right now and he’s still the CEO of the United States.”
