The Kansas City Chiefs and Creed Humphrey have agreed to a four-year, $72 million contract extension, according to multiple reports, making Humphrey the highest-paid center in NFL history.
Humphrey will reportedly receive $50 million guaranteed on the new deal, a figure that surpasses both the total value of the five-year, $60 million contract the Saints signed with Erik McCoy and the $42 million guaranteed on Frank Ragnow’s four-year, $54 million contract with the Lions.
Humphrey was drafted by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2021 draft and was immediately inserted into the starting lineup. Not only did he solidify the interior of a rebuilt offensive line, he quickly developed a rapport with quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
He has also proven to be a reliable player, starting all 51 regular-season games over the past three seasons. The past two seasons ended with Humphrey making the Pro Bowl, as he helped the Chiefs win back-to-back Super Bowls.
The Chiefs have been eyeing the possibility of three key contributors from the 2021 draft class becoming free agents: Humphrey, second-round pick Nick Bolton and sixth-round pick Trey Smith. They have expressed interest in signing Bolton, one of the league’s most underrated linebackers, to a long-term deal, but given their salary cap space, keeping all three players could be difficult.
Humphrey and most of the Chiefs’ starters did not play in the preseason finale against the Bears on Thursday night. They open the regular season against the Ravens in a rematch of the AFC Championship game on Sept. 5.
