COSTA MESA, California — Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh has become as popular for his winning ways as for his entertaining personality, which has led one player to compare him to the award-winning comedian and actor.
“I hope this doesn’t get him in trouble, but he reminds me of Will Ferrell,” Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman said Monday. “I don’t know if it’s the way he speaks or the metaphors or anything, but he really reminds me of Will Ferrell.”
Perryman said he hasn’t spoken to Harbaugh yet, but imagined Harbaugh would hear those comments at practice Tuesday and talk about them. When asked which version of Ferrell Harbaugh came to mind, Perryman probably mentioned Ferrell’s performance in the movie “Step Brothers.” He joked that even Will Ferrell from “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” could get him in trouble.
“I don’t know if it’s the tone of his voice or the way he speaks, but the first thing that comes to mind is Will Ferrell,” Perryman said. “I mean, I take the guy seriously. But I take everything he says seriously. But when he makes a joke, I start falling out of my seat.”
Harbaugh has dabbled in comedy before. In 2017, he appeared on Comedy Central’s show ‘Detroiters.’ Harbaugh was playing Fowling, a game that combines soccer, bowling and horseshoes. Players take turns throwing the soccer ball at 10 bowling pins until one team knocks them all down.
But Harbaugh struggled. When he lost, he ended up screaming and getting angry every time he missed a throw.
“Well, it’s a completely different mechanism. Fouling is different,” Harbaugh said. “Do you think LeBron James is good at pop-a-shots?”
