LOS ANGELES — Linebacker Khalil Mack, who will become an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his 11-year career, said Sunday that he is unsure about his football future.
“There are so many different thoughts in my head right now,” Mack, 33, said. “I can’t make a definite decision about what I’m going to do because I don’t know if I’ll be able to play football in the future. So there’s something I need to discuss with my wife. Spend time with my kids and try not to make hasty decisions after a loss. .”
The Chargers’ season ended Saturday after a 32-12 loss to the Houston Texans in the wild-card round. Mack recorded a season-high two sacks for a loss, a game he hoped would be the start of a trip to the Super Bowl in his 11th season.
“I can’t create this situation for myself. Even if I selfishly feel like, ‘Damn,’ you know what I’m saying? ‘This is who he was,’” Mack said.
Mack, the Defensive Player of the Year (2016) and one of the most decorated outside linebackers in NFL history, had little success with the team. He lost all five playoff appearances in his career.
On Sunday, Mack and the rest of the Chargers packed out their lockers for the offseason. Mack said he may return for a 12th year due to lack of success with the team, but spending time with his family and his two sons, ages 2 and 3, may be more important.
Mack said he doesn’t have a timeline for when he will make a decision, but he still believes he has the best chance to win for the Chargers.
“As long as Justin Herbert is your quarterback. (Safety) Derwin James and everyone who loves the game of football and Jim Harbaugh coaching?” Mac said. “You know there’s always a chance to win. Yes, that’s a given.”
James said he’s already recruiting Mack back to the Chargers.
“I told him we want him back, we want him back,” James said.
Cornerback Asante Samuel Jr., who has not played since Week 4 with a shoulder injury, said he was actually dealing with “stinger symptoms” in both shoulders from the collision. He also said the injury was related to what he was born with, but declined to give further details. Samuel said he expects to get healthy through the offseason program.
“In my 20 years as a player, I’ve never missed more than two, three or four games in a season like this, so it was definitely tough not being with my brothers,” he said. “It broke my heart not to be out there.”
Samuel said he did not think the injury would affect his career going forward. He is an unrestricted free agent but has said he would like to return to the Chargers.
“I love the Chargers, it’s a great organization moving in the right direction,” he said. “I hope I can come back.”
