I think if it’s truly impossible to sign a new top-tier center this season, they could accept either Trevoh Chalobah or Marc Guehi coming in. Then, in the summer, they sign someone similar to that top center. Ruben Dias, for example (even though it seemed almost impossible even at the time).
But if you were to ask me to pick a new centre-back this month who would help improve what we have, neither Chalobah nor Guehi would be so high on my list.
I like both players. Don’t misunderstand. Guehi will come sooner than Chalobah. But none of that is what we really need there. We need a centre-back leader who is attacking, dominant in the air and on the ground, and has the best experience. A confident person who comes in from the back and organizes the entire team, a person who speaks up throughout the game regardless of win or loss, and an all-rounder who is good at defending and passing from the back.
Niether Chalobah or Guehi ticks all those boxes. Guehi has leadership qualities and is a solid, decent defender, but in my opinion he is not the player we need. I like that he is the current captain and has good Premier League and international experience.
As I said, I would not be against signing Guehi or recalling Chalobah. Because both are much better than Axel Disasi and Tosin Adabrabioyo. And I’d pick them both over Benoit Badiashile. So I think they’ll enhance what we already have. But they are not the answer when it comes to promoting this team and pushing us to challenge for the top again. The only way I could be happy with either one is if they sign a centre-back like Dias as soon as the summer transfer window opens.
It’s definitely a decent option, but in my opinion it’s far from the best option.
