The Center notified Delhi High Court Chief Justice Manmohan’s elevation to the Supreme Court bench on Tuesday (December 3, 2024).
In a related post, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal wrote about I am delighted to announce the appointment of Justice Manmohan Shri, Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.” If he takes office as a Supreme Court judge, the working power of the Supreme Court will increase to 33, one short of the approved power of 34, including the Chief Justice of India.
On November 28, the Supreme Court recommended the appointment of Justice Manmohan to the Supreme Court.
The two vacancies in the apex court arose following the retirement of Justice Hima Kohli and former CJI DY Chandrachud.
“Judge Manmohan is the second-highest-ranking high court judge in all of India and is the highest judge of the Delhi High Court.”
“While recommending his name, we have taken into account the fact that there is currently only one judge of the Supreme Court, a judge of the Delhi High Court,” the SC Collegium statement proposing his name said.
Justice Manmohan was appointed as a judge of the Delhi High Court on March 13, 2008, and has been serving as Chief Justice since September 29, 2024.
He was appointed as Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on November 9, 2023.
Justice Manmohan (61 years old) is the son of the late Jagmohan, a famous bureaucrat-turned-politician who once served as the governor of Jammu and Kashmir and the lieutenant governor of Delhi.
Justice Manmohan, who was a senior lawyer at the time, was appointed as an associate judge of the Delhi High Court on March 13, 2008, and became a permanent judge on December 17, 2009.
He registered as a lawyer in 1987 after obtaining his law degree from Delhi University Campus Law Centre.
The retirement age of SC judges is 65 years and that of High Court judges is 62 years.
