Italian journalist Cecilia Sala was released on January 8 after spending 19 days in an Iranian prison. She was arrested in Tehran on December 19 while reporting for the daily Il Foglio and the Chora Media podcast. Sala, 29, was in Iran on a journalist visa. She was accused of violating the Islamic Republic’s laws and was imprisoned in Evin Prison near the Iranian capital.
Negotiations between Italian and Iranian authorities for Salah’s release could include talks with Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi, a 38-year-old Iranian citizen who was arrested in Milan on December 16 at Washington’s request, according to multiple sources. It is believed that this is why Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni visited the United States on January 4th. U.S. authorities have accused Abedini of violating sanctions against the regime, exporting electronic equipment to Iran and supporting a terrorist organization responsible for the deaths of three U.S. soldiers in Jordan.
