Georgia cornerback Daniel Harris became the latest Bulldogs player to be arrested on a driving violation Thursday night.
According to Rivals’ UGA Sports, Harris was charged with several counts, including no proof of insurance, having obscuring material on windows or windshield, not wearing a seat belt, possession of an unregistered vehicle, and reckless driving. He was released just before midnight after posting $10 bond for each charge.
Harris’ arrest was for a relatively minor driving-related charge, but it’s part of a very clear pattern for the football team. Since offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruit Chandler LeCroy were killed in a street racing-related accident in January 2023, more than 25 members of the program have been arrested or cited for driving-related offenses.
Harris also became the sixth player to be arrested on a driving charge in 2024.
“I’ll be the first to admit we haven’t solved that problem,” Georgia coach Kirby Smart said at SEC media days in July. RB Trevor Etienne did not play in the first game of the season after reaching a plea deal related to his spring DWI arrest.
“What happened off the field is something we can’t tolerate,” Smart said nearly two months ago. “It’s very unfortunate. Disappointing is probably the best word to use. I always talk about dealing with the consequences of wins and losses. We try not to base it on results. In this case, it’s very disappointing.”
Smart also revealed at SEC media days that players have been fined by their teams’ NIL organizations for various violations of the law.
Harris has seen significant playing time over the first two weeks of the season. The sophomore recorded four tackles in wins over Clemson and Tennessee Tech, and it’s unclear how Thursday night’s absence will affect his status for Saturday’s game against Kentucky.
