Jack Draper was eliminated in straight sets in the Canadian Open men’s singles on Wednesday, but won his doubles match later that day.
British No 1 Draper was playing his first hard-court singles match since the Miami Masters in March after being knocked out in the second round by Taylor Fritz on clay at the Olympic Games in Paris last week.
The 22-year-old lost 7-5 6-2 in just over an hour and a half, with Australia’s Jordan Thompson confirming his place in the last 32 against second seed Alexander Zverev.
But Draper returned to the court just two hours later to advance to the men’s doubles quarterfinals alongside Italy’s Yannick Sinner.
Draper paid a heavy price for a series of unexcused errors in her singles loss, missing a chance to build momentum ahead of the US Open, the final Grand Slam of the year, which begins Aug. 26 at Flushing Meadows. Live on Sky Sports.
Thompson, ranked world number 30, took control with a break in the seventh game and eventually won the third set point after the Briton briefly turned the match around on serve.
Draper fought back to save two break points in the opening service game of the second set and hit several eye-catching winners during the match.
However, double faults in games three and seven cost his 30-year-old opponent a spot in the second round.
But it wasn’t over yet for the British players in Montreal this week as Draper and Sinner beat Alexander Bublik and Ben Shelton 7-6 (7-2) 6-1 to advance to the men’s doubles quarter-finals.
In other matches at the Canadian Open, Britain’s Harriet Dart lost a thrilling 3-6 6-3 6-7 (2-7) match to Diana Schneider in Toronto.
Naomi Osaka returns to the US Open for the first time since 2022 after beating Tunisia’s Ons Jaber 6-3 6-1.
