But the second bill is the first of its kind and could serve as one of the strongest safeguards for actors concerned about AI’s impact on their careers. While such legislation provides state-level protections in California, various unions and SAG-AFTRA are pushing for support by introducing the No Fakes Act in Congress, which would criminalize AI abuse at the federal level.
Speaking of SAG-AFTRA, if you were paying attention to their strike against Hollywood last year, you know they are fiercely against AI abuse. Specifically, they insisted that actors should consent to the use of AI cloning and be properly compensated for it.
The reason this advocacy was important was because there was (and still is) concern that studios would create digital copies of everyone from bit parts to lead actors and use them for free, forever, without compensation to the performers.
