One of the most unexpectedly popular games of 2022 was a cute cult simulator. Worship of the LambDeveloped by Massive Monster and published by Devolver Digital, it took the world by storm when it released two years ago, speaking to every little geek and pervert out there. If you decide to commit to a marathon for that price, you get a pretty substantial and enjoyable adventure that will last a weekend or so. That’s roughly how I played the game when I reviewed it, and it really suits my approach.
When you enter, you get Dive deep into accessible systems—like managing which cults mine, tending to crops, and spreading the good word of the Lamb—and after 48 hours, you can completely finish the game. It’s one of the smoothest gaming experiences I’ve had in years, and it’s a godsend to be able to complete it in about 20 hours.
Worship of the Lamb The cult’s disgusting nature (living sacrifices are made and marriages with subjects are up for discussion) combined with the lovely plush aesthetics make for an uncomfortably fun experience. The first time you swing your axe at an enemy it feels weird, but soon decapitating a heretic starts to feel almost natural. It’s your responsibility to feed the cult members, and if you run out of food you can feed them their own waste or the corpses that eventually start to pile up.
It’s all a little scary, but true Worship of the Lamb‘s artistic style makes light of the subject matter, conveying how much atrocity we are willing to tolerate if it is presented in a way that appeals to our emotions and desires. In some ways, it is the most blatantly honest simulator to date, because why else would we play a game like this if not to exercise complete and sometimes terrifying control?
If that wasn’t enough for the base game, Massive Monster has been pushing its dark fantasy even further over the past two years. Since then, it’s added more story to the game, new outfits and forms for followers to wear, an expanded arsenal, and deeper mechanics like the sin system. Oh, and it’s also added breeding. This tweet from the team sums it up better than I can.
