BRUSSELS (Brussels Morning Newspaper): The renovated building will house 15 apartments in the centre and a social recycling centre that will collect 128 tonnes of waste by 2023, 111 tonnes of which will be recycled in Saint-Gilles.
The €2.8 million renovation will include 15 apartments in the renovated building. The ground floor will also house a large space for a non-profit called the Social Recycling Centre, which collects and repairs or recycles items, furniture and other items, and gives them to those in need, DH reports.
How does a social recycling center in Saengjil give new life to discarded items?
La Recyclerie Sociale collected 128 tonnes and recycled 111 tonnes in 2023. They take material items that people want to get rid of from their homes, repair them and resell them at a low price. This recycling project, managed by Group One in partnership with the municipality, has been in the works for some time. The move to a new location is proof that the Saint-Gilles authorities want to see more publicity for the non-profit organization. They found it difficult to attract customers to their old building along Rue de Belgrade.
Next to the social recycling center is also the Couture Truck. The group is famous for their truck that roams the city’s markets and squares. People can bring their clothes there for repair. Now they are permanently based in Saint-Gilles, and they also repair and customize clothes using scraps of fabric donated by Oxfam, with which they work. The sewing workshops also involve making clothes, such as raincoats made from old umbrellas, which are very popular.
