London — British heavyweight Tyson Fury has retired from boxing again, a month after losing his rematch to Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk.
Fury, 36, announced the decision Monday by posting a short video to his Instagram account with a cryptic message.
“Hello everyone, I’ll keep this short and fun. “I would like to announce my retirement from boxing,” Fury said. “It was amazing. I loved every moment. Finally, I will end with this. Dick Turpin wore a mask. May God bless you all. See you on the other side.”
It is unclear why Fury was referring to Turpin, the famous 18th-century English highway robber and horse thief.
Fury was upset by a unanimous decision when he lost his rematch to Usyk on December 21 in Saudi Arabia. However, Usyk landed 179 of 423 punches thrown (42%), while Fury landed 144 of 509 punches (28%).
Fury admitted he made mistakes by showing off too much, especially when he lost by split decision in his first fight in Riyadh in May.
Fury announced his retirement specifically ahead of his 34th birthday in August 2022.
But he fought again two months later.
Fury’s record stands at 34 wins, 2 losses, 1 loss, and 24 KOs.
The loss to Usyk was the only loss of Fury’s career, which began in 2008 and includes a draw with American boxer Deontay Wilder in 2018. ___
