Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich will undergo season-ending back surgery.
The Brewers released a statement Thursday saying Yelich made the decision “after careful consideration and consultation with my medical team.” Dr. Brandon Rebholz is scheduled to perform the surgery in Milwaukee on Friday.
Yelich, 32, hasn’t played since being ruled out of a game on July 23. The Brewers still sit nine games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds in first place in the National League Central as of Thursday night.
The 2018 NL MVP earned his third All-Star selection this year. Despite being on the disabled list twice with back problems, he hit .315/.406 with 11 home runs, 42 RBIs and 21 stolen bases in 73 games.
