Boris Johnson was widely ridiculed online on Tuesday after saying Donald Trump would support Ukraine and democracy.
The former British prime minister reportedly met the US presidential candidate at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. In a social media post about the debate, Johnson said Trump was in “top shape” after surviving an assassination attempt on the campaign trail late last week.
“We discussed Ukraine and I have no doubt that he will be strong and resolute in supporting that country and defending democracy,” added Johnson, who served as British prime minister from 2019 to 2022.
Johnson’s comments about former US presidents have left many observers scratching their heads. Trump was impeached in 2019 after being accused of withholding military aid to Ukraine in exchange for a “favor” from the Ukrainian government. As Ukraine waged war with Russia, Trump refused to call Russian President Vladimir Putin a war criminal and criticized US spending in Kiev. Trump’s 2024 running mate, Senator J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), has openly supported cutting aid to Eastern European countries.
And despite Johnson’s comments about “defending democracy,” Trump’s ambitions to retake the White House have been portrayed by critics as a threat to democracy since the insurrection in Washington on Jan. 6, 2021.
Many social media users have been asking questions to British politicians.
Some have warned Johnson that if he wants a U.S. administration that supports Ukraine, Trump-Vance would not be the first candidate to step forward.
Some have wondered what effect Johnson’s praise for Trump might have on American voters.
