A body has been recovered after heavy rains caused flooding in southeastern Spain, the regional leader of Valencia said.
“The body has been found, but out of respect for the family, we will not provide any more data,” Carlos Mazzon told reporters.
Spain has suffered heavy rain and hail storms, causing flooding in several areas.
Six people were missing from Letour, a town of less than 1,000 in the eastern province of Albacete, officials said.
Rescue efforts are continuing overnight.
Videos uploaded to social media showed flooding causing chaos, bridges collapsing and cars speeding through the streets. Another video showed people clinging to trees to avoid being swept away.
Radio and TV stations are reportedly receiving hundreds of calls for help from people trapped in flood zones or looking for loved ones, as emergency services struggle to reach some areas.
Local official Milagros Tolon told Spanish public television station TVE that emergency workers were using drones to search for missing people in the hard-hit municipality of Letur.
“The priority is to find these people,” she said.
Spain’s meteorological agency AEMET declared a red alert for the Valencia region and a second-highest alert for parts of Andalusia.
Valencia City Hall said on Wednesday that all schools and sporting events would be suspended and parks would be closed.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said in a post on X that he was “concerned” by reports of missing people.
He urged people to follow the advice of authorities, adding: “You should avoid unnecessary travel.”
