President Biden said in a Sunday opinion piece in the Washington Post that the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, reminds Americans that democracy is by no means guaranteed.
“We must resolve every year to remember January 6, 2021. To remember it as a day when our democracy was tested and triumphed. We must remember that even in America democracy is by no means guaranteed.” Biden said in the Post article.
He added, “We must never forget that democracy is what makes everything possible, including our freedoms, rights, liberties, and dreams.” “And it’s up to every generation of Americans to defend and protect it.”
Monday marks four years since the January 6th terrorist attacks. President-elect Trump promised to grant clemency to rioters who showed up at the Capitol that day as Congress certified Biden’s 2020 presidential election victory. The president-elect also hinted that some pardons could be granted in the first hours of his second term.
“A violent insurrectionist attacked our Capitol, threatened the lives of our elected officials, and attacked our brave law enforcement officers,” Biden said of the January 6 attack. “We should be proud that our democracy withstood these attacks. “And we should all be happy that we won’t see such shameful attacks again this year.”
“But we must not forget. We must remember the wisdom of the proverb: A country that forgets its past is doomed to repeat it. “We cannot accept a repeat of what happened four years ago,” he added.
Also on Sunday, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said the violence of the Capitol attack “did not end that day.”
“It’s not over that day,” Pelosi said on “Face the Nation” with CBS News’ Margaret Brennan. “As you know, (President-elect Trump) called on these people to continue the violence. “My husband was a victim of it all and still has injuries from the attack.”
