The fourth Test between Australia and India set an Australian Test match attendance record of over 350,700 people passing through the MCG gates over five days, surpassing the previous record of 350,534 set in 1937.
Cricket Australia confirmed on Monday that 51,371 people had already entered the first session of day five, with more arriving later in the afternoon.
The crowds for these Test matches were incredible – 87,242, 85,147, 83,073, 43,867 and 51,371 per day. A fifth day crowd exceeding that of the fourth day is unheard of for the Melbourne Cricket Club, which runs the MCG, and an underestimate of fifth day crowd numbers.
They opened Yarra Park outside the ground for general public parking on day 5, which is unusual. However, only one door was open and many fans arrived late, causing significant traffic delays before play.
The record numbers followed huge crowds at the MCG in the 2022 T20 World Cup where 90,293 watched India play Pakistan and 82,507 watched India play Zimbabwe.
