England Test captain Ben Stokes has been ruled out for the entire summer due to a hamstring rupture. The injury occurred during the Hundred on Sunday, August 11. Unfortunately, the setback will see Stokes miss the rest of the season, which will have implications for England as they navigate the upcoming matches without their leader. His absence is a huge blow as he has been instrumental in the team’s performances as captain and all-rounder.
Ben Stokes’ injury:
After the Superchargers set a target of 153, Ben Stokes came to the plate but had to retire with a thigh muscle problem. He felt discomfort after recording a single early in the inning and immediately collapsed, pulling off his glove in frustration. He used crutches to return to the Superchargers dugout, but it became clear that the injury was serious.
Although the medical team quickly treated him, Stokes was carried off the pitch without recovering. He was later stretchered off to an ambulance. Stokes is due to undergo tests on Monday and it looks unlikely he will be available for England’s upcoming red-ball series. His injury is a serious concern given his vital role in the team.
Statement from ECB’s Ben Stokes:
England’s captain has been carted off the pitch and is now officially ruled out for the remainder of the summer season. The news was confirmed by an official press release, which also stated that no replacement will be added to the squad for the home series against Sri Lanka, which begins on August 21. England will proceed with their existing line-up as they face the challenge of competing without their captain.
In that statement, the England Cricket Board said: “England Men’s Test Captain Ben Stokes will be out for the remainder of the summer after tearing his left hamstring while playing for Northern Superchargers in The Hundred on Sunday. Following tests conducted in Leeds on Tuesday, Stokes will be ruled out for the three-match Rothesay Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins on Wednesday 21 August at Emirates Old Trafford. No additional players have been added to the squad for the series.”
The board also noted that the all-rounder is targeting a return for England’s winter Test tour of Pakistan, which is scheduled to begin in early October. The tour will feature three Test matches and the team will be hoping the captain recovers in time to lead them. Stokes’ return is expected to be a major boost for the team as they prepare for a fierce series in Pakistan.
