Coach Rahul Dravid’s career with the team came to an end as Rohit Sharma-led India won the T20 World Cup trophy and after the win, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Chairman Roger Binny congratulated the Men in Blue. Congratulating the win, former opener Gautam Gambhir said it will be a good thing for the Indian cricket team if he takes over the role of India coach. India defeated South Africa by just 7 runs to lift the T20 WC trophy for the second time.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is evaluating the next coach as Rahul Dravid’s tenure is set to reach a conclusion after the T20 World Cup 2024 in June. Gambhir has been closely associated with this role, with many former cricketers supporting the 2011 World Cup winner’s success as head coach of the Indian team.
He has already said that he would “like to coach the Indian team” and would be honoured if given the chance to do so. With Dravid’s time with the Men in Blue slowly coming to an end, Gambhir remained tight-lipped about the possibility of replacing his former teammate.
Vinny said that as India’s coach, he needs someone who has experience in all forms of cricket.
“Gautam Gambhir has a lot of experience and if he takes the job, it will definitely be good for Indian cricket. He has the experience and that is what India needs. India needs a coach who has played the game and he has played in all three forms of the game,” Binney told ANI.
Post-match Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retired from the T20 international squad following India’s World Cup victory by beating South Africa in the final in Barbados.
Vinny said the Aces would be “difficult to replace” as per-forms, but he wanted the younger players to step into the shoes of outright veterans.
“They have been brilliant… It will be very difficult to replace them immediately… It will be a big loss at the moment. Hopefully, we can bring in some young cricketers. The IPL is full of talent. It will not be easy but we can try to get the young cricketers to do what they have done so far,” he added.
The Indian team improved significantly under Dravid’s leadership, reaching the finals of the ODI World Cup and the 2023 World Test Championship before losing to Australia in both events. India’s 11-year ICC title drought ended with victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup. This was possible thanks to team unity and systematic procedures.
“As a cricketer, Rahul has been fantastic. His contribution to the team has been enormous because of the experience he brings… He has done a truly fantastic job with them. It is a shame he has lost a few games. He lost the last World Cup. .” Vinnie said.
