White signed a three-year deal to replace David Saker, who departed in May after a disappointing seventh-place finish in his third season.
White, 40, is in his first managerial role, but has spent the past two years working under Sydney Sixers coach Greg Shefford and was previously an assistant with the Adelaide Strikers.
“I’ve had a lot of great memories and success as a player here, so it’s a real thrill to be back in Renegades colors after so many years,” White said. “The thought of working with this playing group of really exciting players, both young and experienced, is really exciting and I’m really looking forward to getting started and starting my journey as a coach.”
As a player, White represented Australia 142 times across all three formats. He is best known for his contributions as a middle-order batsman in white-ball teams.
Although his Test career was limited to four appearances on the 2008 tour of India, White captained the T20I team six times and the ODI team once in 2011.
He was also part of the Australian team that won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2009, beating New Zealand in the final. Domestically, White played in the Renegades’ only BBL championship in 2019.
White, Victoria’s longest-serving Sheffield Shield captain, scored more than 7000 first-class runs from his teenage debut in the summer of 2000-2001 to his final game in 2019.
