Shakib Al Hasan failed his bowling action test for the second time after being suspended from bowling at the highest level of domestic and international cricket. The latest independent reassessment of his behavior took place last month at the Sri Ramachandra Sports Science Center in Chennai.
As a result, Shakib’s suspension remains in place. “As a result, the player’s suspension from bowling in international cricket remains in place following an initial independent assessment at the Loughborough University Test Center in England,” BCB said in a statement on Saturday. “A successful reassessment is required for the bowling suspension to be lifted.
“Shakib is currently unable to bowl but can continue to play as a batsman in all forms of domestic and international cricket.”
Shakib failed the first Test at Loughborough University in England late last year after he was reported to have behaved suspiciously during an England county match in September. This led to the ECB suspending him, and under Article 11.3 of the ICC Rules for Illegal Bowling Practices, his suspension was automatically recognized and enforced by the ICC in international cricket and by all domestic cricket federations in domestic competitions.
BCB president Faruque Ahmed said on January 3 that he wanted Shakib back in the team, but the ongoing suspension is likely to impact Bangladesh’s squad for the Champions Trophy in February and March. It was also recently reported that Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto had given his nod to BCB regarding Shakib’s ODI return. BCB announced that it will announce the Bangladesh squad at noon on Sunday.
Shakib withdrew from international cricket after the two-match Test tour in India from September to October 2024. After that tour he was unable to return to Bangladesh due to student protests. Shakib was a member of parliament for the Awami League government that fell to power on August 5 following a student-led revolution in Bangladesh.
Shakib last played for Bangladesh in two Tests against India and his last ODI came during the 2023 World Cup.
