The next stop on the HBCU Homecoming Tour is Alabama State University, known for its pretty girls, dazzling dance teams (Sensational Stingettes and the world-famous Honey Beez), and boisterous school pride in the heart of Montgomery, Alabama.
Located in the birthplace of the modern civil rights movement, Alabama State University was founded in 1867 by nine enslaved men now known as the Marion Nine, making ASU one of the nation’s oldest institutions of higher education dedicated to African Americans.
Following a growing trend among HBCUs, ASU boasts a diverse student body comprised of students from more than 41 states and 21 countries. According to the official website, the student-to-faculty ratio is 20 to 1 and “students receive the personal attention, mentoring, encouragement and knowledge they need to achieve their dreams.”
By 2024, this historic institution will offer more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, ranging from historic teacher education programs to a long list of high-demand programs such as the Doctor of Physical Therapy and Ph.D. She holds a Master of Science in Microbiology, Master of Accountancy, Master of Social Work, and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance.
Notable graduates include: 2 ChainzRickey Smiley, Reverend Ralph David Abernathy, Broadway stars Bonita Hamilton Ceasar and Brandon McCall (lion king), Peabody Award winner/actor/director Timothy Ware Hill, legendary soccer coach Woody McCorvey, international rugby star Phaidra Knight, and the late Archbishop Joseph Lawson Howze of the Catholic Church.
