There are new Amazon Web Services (AWS) community events every week where you can network, learn something new, and immerse yourself in the community. When you’re in a community, everyone grows together and no one is left behind. Last week was no exception. We will highlight the Dach AWS Community Day, which concluded with a talk by Viktoria Semaan titled How to Create Impactful Content and Build a Strong Personal Brand, and the Peruvian User Group (UGCONF & SERVERLESSDAY 2024), which organized two days of talks and learning opportunities. Jeff Barr on how to create your own luck. Community events are ongoing, so check out our upcoming AWS Community Days.
Released last week
Here are the releases that caught my attention:
AI21 Labs’ Jamba 1.5 model family is now available on Amazon Bedrock. – Jamba 1.5 Large and 1.5 Mini models feature the longest 256k context window on the market, enabling complex tasks such as analyzing long documents. Integrates into enterprise workflows for professional AI solutions with built-in support for structured JSON output, function calls, and document processing. For more information, check out AI21 Labs’ Jamba 1.5 model family now on Amazon Bedrock, and visit the AI21 Labs page on Amazon Bedrock to read the documentation.
AWS Lambda now supports the Amazon Linux 2023 runtime in AWS GovCloud (US) Regions. – These runtimes offer the latest language features, including Python 3.12, Node.js 20, Java 21, .NET 8, Ruby 3.3, and Amazon Linux 2023. It has a smaller deployment footprint, updated libraries, and a new package manager. You can also use container base images to build and deploy your functions as container images.
Amazon SageMaker Studio now supports automatic termination of idle applications. – You can now enable automatic termination of inactive JupyterLab and CodeEditor applications using Amazon SageMaker deployment images v2.0 and later. Administrators can set the idle shutdown time at the domain or user profile level through optional customization. This cost control mechanism helps you avoid costs for unused instances and is available in all AWS Regions where SageMaker Studio is available.
Amazon S3 implements a default 128KB minimum object size for S3 lifecycle transition rules for all S3 storage classes. – Reduce conversion costs for datasets with many small objects by reducing conversion requests. Users can override the default and customize the minimum object size. Existing rules will remain unchanged, but new or modified configurations will have the new default values applied.
AWS Lake Formation centralized access control for Amazon Redshift data sharing is now available in 11 additional regions. – Enables fine-grained permission management, including table, column, and row-level access to shared Amazon Redshift data. It also supports tag-based access control and trusted identity propagation through AWS IAM Identity Center for improved security and simplified management.
Llama 3.2 Generated AI Models Now Available on Amazon Bedrock – The collection includes 90B and 11B parametric multimodal models for sophisticated inference tasks and 3B and 1B text-only models for edge devices. These models are designed to support vision tasks, deliver improved performance, and drive responsible AI innovation across a variety of applications. The model supports 128K context length and multilingual capabilities in 8 languages. Learn more in Introducing the Llama 3.2 Model on Meta on Amazon Bedrock.
Share AWS End User Messaging SMS resources across multiple AWS accounts – You can use AWS Resource Access Manager (RAM) to share phone numbers, caller ID, call pools, and blocked call lists. Additionally, Amazon SNS now delivers SMS text messages through AWS End User Messaging, providing enhanced features such as two-way messaging and granular permissions. These updates provide greater flexibility and control for SMS messaging across AWS services.
AWS Serverless Application Repository now supports AWS PrivateLink. Enable direct connections from your Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) without exposure to the internet. This increases security by keeping communications within the AWS network. It is available in all regions where AWS Serverless Application Repository is available, and can be set up using the AWS Management Console or AWS Command Line Interface (AWS CLI).
Amazon SageMaker with MLflow now supports AWS PrivateLink for secure traffic routing. – Enable secure data transfer from your Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) to MLflow tracking servers within the AWS network. This enhances the protection of sensitive information by preventing public Internet exposure. Available in most AWS Regions, it improves security for machine learning (ML) and generative AI experiments using MLflow.
Introducing Amazon EC2 C8g and M8g Instances – Improved performance for compute-intensive and general-purpose workloads. With up to 3x more vCPUs, 3x more memory, 75% more memory bandwidth, and 2x more L2 cache, these instances deliver data processing, scalability, and cost performance for a variety of applications including high-performance computing (HPC), batch, and more. Improves efficiency. Processing and microservices. Read more at Running Compute.
Deliver intensive, sustainable, general-purpose workloads with the new Amazon EC2 C8g and M8g instances.
Llama 3.2 models are now available in Amazon SageMaker JumpStart. – This model offers parameters of varying sizes from 1B to 90B, supports multimodal tasks including image inference, and is more efficient for AI workloads. The 1B and 3B models allow for fine tuning, while the Llama Guard 3 11B Vision supports responsible innovation and system-level safety. Learn more about Meta’s Llama 3.2 model. Now available on Amazon SageMaker JumpStart.
