Cummins bowled 167 overs across five Tests against India, taking 25 wickets at 21.36, the most by an Australian bowler.
Australia’s Champions Trophy opener is against England on February 22 and as part of their preparations they will have a one-off ODI in Sri Lanka on February 13 following the Test series.
Cummins captained Australia to the 2023 ODI World Cup title in India, but has played only two matches in the format since then due to workload management.
Australia used a variety of alternative captains during that period. Steven Smith led the team against the West Indies last season before Mitchell Marsh took over the role for England, with Smith again filling in for the crucial match of that series. Against Pakistan earlier this summer, Josh Inglis led the team in the final ODI in Perth.
“Josh has been working really hard and all the news on how he is responding to his calf injury recovery has been going really well,” Bailey said. “Considering the amount of time he would have missed and how we can organize ourselves and the load those fast players can carry, it’s probably a little tight.”
“Other than the conditions we expect to face, in Sean’s favor, he’s very tough,” Bailey said. “We know he can do tremendous things if needed.”
