Nic White has been replaced by Jake Gordon at halfback and Dylan Pietsch will start the first Test against the Wallabies, replacing veteran Marika Koroibete.
James Slipper was removed from the bench a week after breaking George Gregan’s Australian record with his 140th Test cap, replaced by Isaac Kailea.
Back-up flyhalf Ben Donaldson comes on the bench in place of Tom Lynagh.
Cane became the 13th player to play 100 Tests for the All Blacks, with Beauden Barrett starting at fly-half as Damien McKenzie moved to the bench.
Anton Lienert-Brown comes in at center for the injured Jordie Barrett.
Schmidt admitted the Wallabies needed to be much more physical early in the contest after being down 21-7 after 20 minutes in Sydney.
“We didn’t help last weekend when we fell behind early against a fast-moving, up-tempo All Blacks team,” Schmidt said.
“We know we need a better start than last week, with physical dominance and accuracy required.”

All Blacks coach Scott Robertson explained his decision to drop flyhalf McKenzie to the bench.
“Damian McKenzie can provide skilled cover at both first five and full-back, just as Beauden did previously, and it is great to bring in David Havili to complete 23, providing strong depth across the backline. ” said Robertson.
“We are delighted to have the opportunity to put in a perfect performance against the Wallabies in Wellington this week.”
The Bledisloe Cup may remain in New Zealand for another year, but the Wallabies have plenty to play for as they aim to build on last week’s strong performance in the final 60 minutes.
