It doesn’t happen often that a batsman comes up against Jasprit Bumrah, especially in Tests. But on Thursday, Australian Test debutant Sam Konstas played a special knock against Bumrah, hitting his first six in three years.
In the seventh over of the fourth Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Konstas surprised everyone by pushing Bumrah up to three. Previously, the last time Bumrah hit a six was on January 7, 2021, against Cameron Green in Sydney.
The 19-year-old Konstas hit two sixes against Bumrah during his 65-ball, 60-run knock. He became the second youngest Australian player to score 50 goals, after Ian Craig, who scored a half-century against South Africa in 1953 at the age of 17.
Konstas’ innings included several attempts to play reverse scoops and ramps. After his 11th delivery in international cricket, the opening batsman attempted to reverse scoop Bumrah but was beaten, and again in the next over. However, he succeeded in clearing the fence on his third attempt.
Overall, Konstas scored 34 runs off 33 balls against Bumrah, hitting the currently world-class Test bowler with four fours and two sixes. The youngster looked confident and in a mid-interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Konstas said: “I will continue to target him. I hope he can come back,” he said on his clash with Bumrah.
