Good or bad, there is no new season. american horror story This spooky season. But don’t think for a moment that it’s because Ryan Murphy is running out of ideas. you’re welcome. In addition to the second season of his true crime series. monster Netflix and the upcoming fourth season of the micro-anthology american horror storyMurphy has a new FX show. called grotesqueIt’s about a troubled detective investigating a series of disturbing murders. Each crime scene is highly staged with increasing religious symbolism. So it’s basically Ryan Murphy’s take on David Fincher’s case. seven.
Based on the first two episodes, mostly Working. Sure, there’s some creepy dialogue and a lot more. hmm In typical Ryan Murphy fashion, plot points can be thrown at the wall for fun and not really be handled well. But damn if the setting and characters aren’t interesting. If there’s one thing Murphy can do really well, it’s keep you hooked in just a few episodes.
(Ed. memo: This post contains some spoilers for the first two episodes of the ‘drama’. Grotesque.)

grotesque It opens with a hard-boiled detective named Lois (Niece Nash) called to a crime scene. And honestly, it’s not all that great when she and her officers have gems of conversation like the following:
“If this isn’t a hate crime, I don’t know what is,” the officer said dryly.
“What do you hate?” Lois asks.
“all.”
It’s exaggerated and dramatic, but you know what? If the crime in question involved feeding a dead man to his family and having them literally die of shock, then maybe that would make sense. That’s what roots us to the genre. This is an exaggerated, overly dramatic kind of show, and the murders can be completely unrealistic (in a very funny way).
Lois has all the hallmarks of a troubled detective. She’s an alcoholic, her husband is in a coma (their marriage was rocky before), and there’s clearly some tension between her and her daughter. It’s a classic archetype, but because she’s not a middle-aged white person, it’s already more compelling than watching the same kind of character continue to juggle his raging alcoholism and her sad, dead wife. We don’t see many dysfunctional female characters like that! Still, one thing is true: she cannot solve this murder or put the pieces together, so she seeks help from an unexpected partner, even if it means hurting her pride.
Meet Sister Megan (Micaela Diamond), a nun who is also an investigative journalist with a morbid fascination for true crime. There’s something more going on with her. From lighthearted banter with your new sexy (or sadomasochistic?) bride to encyclopedic recollections of the most shocking Bible passages. And while Diamond stays true to the role of someone who appears wide-eyed and innocent, she is much more in tune with the macabre, darker side of human nature than her outward demeanor might suggest.

The first shocking murder scene is just the beginning. There are several more throughout the first two episodes, and each time Sister Megan notices a nod to some sort of Christian symbolism. It’s basic, with abundant references to the Seven Deadly Sins typical of Lois’ life (her husband’s extramarital affairs point to her lust, her daughter’s constant obsession with her eating habits and her own alcoholism suggest gluttony). It’s screaming. sevenAll the promises of this case hit much closer to home than Lois was ready for.
The funny thing is, Ryan Murphy tried to do this. before In the fifth season American Horror Story, subtitled hotel. That season was filled with extra schlock: ghosts, vampires, demons, and more. oh my god! — It’s very easy to forget that the central plot is about a detective solving the case of the Ten Commandments Killer (who, as the name suggests, brutally murders his victims for breaking the Ten Commandments). but AHS: Hotel It was honestly a mess, and if there’s one thing Ryan Murphy loves to do, it’s try to do something he’s done before again. american horror story Basically Murder House: The Redux).
grotesque It gives him a chance to do his Bible-inspired murder plot again. And by focusing on crime, he was able to pull it off. After all, mysteries are very interesting. The crime scene is so elaborate and shocking that you can’t take your eyes off it. And as someone who put his stamp on Dan Brown’s work. angel and devil At a ridiculously young age, religious currents are incredibly attractive.
If there’s one thing I keep in mind american horror story Although I’m a fan, the setup is almost always good, but Murphy rarely tries to land it. But hey, considering I’m totally hooked. grotesque now. Let’s see where this fishing line takes me.
new episode of grotesque It premiered on FX on Wednesday at 10pm EDT and aired on Hulu the next day.
