great. There’s just a little time left to get everything you want ready for Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC to release on June 21st. But don’t worry. You’ll need additional challenges to hone your skills before heading into the Land of Shadows. Here’s a mod that might help.
In case you didn’t already know, there are actually a few steps you’ll need to take to access the DLC when it launches. If you haven’t already, you only need to do it once. It arrives. That’s right, that’s over now. You don’t have to experience the pre-DLC experience, but it’s something to smile about anyway.

This mod is simply called ‘Capitalism Mod’, and it’s the work of modder thefifthmatt, who has created many of the fun Elden Ring randomizers that streamers have been playing around with over the past year or so. After all, what makes FromSoft’s work more fun than combing through different locations for the third, fourth, or hundredth time, not knowing what enemies or items you might encounter?
Run by Elden Ring mastermind LilAggy, it’s built for an intentionally tough challenge, so while it essentially does something similar, the Capitalist mode turns things around by not just replacing enemies with harder ones, but by giving you a penalty for literally everything you try. It makes it difficult. To play a game. Yes, “take runes with you when you move, consume stamina, take damage, deal damage or exist”, and “if runes reach 0, you become trapped or die.”
How does it reflect capitalism, you ask? Well, Thefifthmatt explains: “The soul is already a very applicable metaphor for primitive and capital accumulation (the dark soul is literally surrounded by it), because it also encourages behavior that maximizes hoarding and capital accumulation for its own sake at the expense of rational behavior.”
“The mod’s mechanics are somewhat similar to real-world attempts to apply these incentives through microtransactions and in-game currency. I admit there are no production relationships in the mod, but if you really wanted to, you could imagine Marika extracting surplus value from you. It will be.”
