A Gallup poll released Monday found that approval ratings for U.S. leadership across NATO member countries are lower in 2024 than during the first three years of Biden’s presidency.
The average approval rating for U.S. leadership among adults in NATO member countries in 2024 was 35%, the lowest during Biden’s four years in office. The median disapproval rate was 51%.
The results for 2024 represent a slight change from previous years. The median approval rating was 40% in 2023, 38% in 2022, and 41% in 2021. The median disapproval rate was 49% in 2023, 48% in 2022, and 38% in 2021.
Overall, Biden has enjoyed higher approval ratings for U.S. leadership across NATO member countries than when Trump was in the White House.
In 2020, the final year of President Trump’s term, 18% of adults in NATO countries supported U.S. leadership, while 72% disapproved. By comparison, Trump took office in 2017 with a median approval rating of 25% and a median disapproval rating of 59% for U.S. leadership.
The survey included 1,000 interviews with adults from 30 NATO countries in 2024. The margin of error is 3.4 to 4.9 percentage points.
It was released hours before Biden gave his final foreign policy speech. The speech Monday afternoon will focus on the Trump administration’s efforts to strengthen America’s presence around the world, a senior administration official said, and will be delivered at the State Department in Washington, D.C.
President Trump is expected to discuss America’s place on the world stage when he first takes office in 2021 and argue that the country is in a stronger position over the next four years. He will also insist that international alliances and partnerships are the strongest of his administration.
