Mark Gurman bloomberg It was recently reported that Apple would be redesigning the Magic Mouse for the first time since its launch in 2009. In the mouse’s 15-year history, the design has remained largely the same, with the exception of a switch from AA batteries to Lightning in 2015. Switch to USB-C in 2024
But that will soon change.
Charging port placement
One of the biggest criticisms of the Magic Mouse was its charging port. You have to plug it in from the bottom to charge it, which also means you can’t use your computer while the mouse needs to recharge.
Some Magic Mouse advocates say this is better for battery health, while others say it’s not a problem since realistically you’ll only recharge it once every six weeks. The point may be the concept, but that doesn’t change the fact that it sucks.
Nonetheless, Gurman reports that this will change with the next-generation Magic Mouse.
Apple is trying to make its products more relevant while addressing long-standing complaints, including charging port issues.
So in the near future this will no longer be a problem.
ergonomics
There is no specific information about what the new Magic Mouse will actually look like. Except that it will be completely reconsidered to take better ergonomics into account. Apple is aiming to make a better-fitting mouse, perhaps one similar to the MX Master.
The good news is that a new Magic Mouse is in development. We’re told that Apple’s design team has been working on prototype versions of the accessory in recent months in hopes of coming up with something better suited to the modern era.
In a computing world now infused with touch screens, voice commands, and hand gestures, the mouse isn’t as important as it once was.
Many Mac users like Logitech’s MX Master mouse for its ergonomic design and additional features, but they miss out on some of the multi-touch gestures that the Magic Mouse offers. It’s great to see Apple offering the best of both worlds.
release date
The new Magic Mouse is in early development and won’t be released until 2026. “I’m not expecting anything for the next 12 to 18 months,” Gurman says. Apple is also developing a redesigned MacBook Pro with OLED for 2026, so we could potentially see the two products debut together.
