At an event titled “Why words matter”, organized by the Center for International Dialogue (KAICIID), Antonella Sverna, Vice-President of the European Parliament, presented thoughts highlighting the transformative role of language and dialogue in promoting integration and inclusion across Europe. I gave a stimulating speech. In front of an audience of prominent leaders, young participants and interreligious representatives, Sberna passionately outlined his vision for implementing Article 17 of the EU Treaty, which promotes interreligious and intercultural dialogue as a cornerstone of democratic values and social cohesion.
Antonella Sberna, recently appointed Vice President of the European Parliament, delivered a compelling speech today, highlighting the transformative power of interreligious dialogue and the important role of thoughtful communication in fostering European unity. In front of an audience of prominent leaders, Sberna outlined his vision for implementing Article 17, which focuses on promoting democratic values, religious freedom and peaceful coexistence across the European Union.
She eloquently stated: “Active engagement with diverse ethical systems, whether religious or secular, ensures that our social pathways reflect inclusivity and mutual respect, respect diversity and promote unity.”
Commitment to dialogue and inclusion
Sberna emphasized the European Parliament’s commitment to creating a space for dialogue that transcends cultural and religious boundaries. She described Article 17 as a means to build mutual understanding, resolve conflicts, and foster interreligious cooperation. According to her, the council achieves this through a variety of activities, including seminars and roundtables that bring together voices from the religious, philosophical and non-religious communities.
Highlighting the seminar scheduled for December 10, 2024, Sberna said: “Together we create a Europe that is inclusive, united and forward-looking. The next initiative focuses on the importance of intergenerational dialogue in addressing Europe’s future challenges.”
power of words
A central theme of Sberna’s speech was the importance of words in shaping social values. Borrowing from the wisdom of Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, she declared, “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.” These sentiments formed the cornerstone of her call to action to use language responsibly to combat hate speech and promote unity.
“If misused, words can be divisive, cause harm or spread hatred,” Sberna warned. “But when used carefully, words can unite, promote understanding, and challenge prejudice.” She encouraged the audience to embrace the power of language to bring about positive change and to uphold core European values of democracy, freedom, solidarity and human dignity.
Building bridges for the future
Recognizing the challenges ahead, Sberna expressed confidence in our collective ability to achieve meaningful progress. “Through interreligious dialogue, we are creating a common space where diverse communities can coexist.” Her vision for the future includes strengthening cooperation, amplifying diverse voices and creating a sense of belonging among all Europeans.
At the end of her speech, Sberna left the following touching message: “The words we choose today shape the world we live in tomorrow. Let us use this wisely to build a framework for peaceful coexistence and shared responsibility.”
Antonella Sberna’s speech marked an encouraging start to her mission, setting a tone of optimism and cooperation for years to come. As the European Parliament prepares for the December seminar and future plans, her leadership promises to uphold the values that unite Europe in its diversity.
