Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s daughter Shiloh Jolie-Pitt has publicly confirmed that she will be dropping “Pitt” from her last name.
Shiloh first filed a name change petition in May, when she turned 18, asking a Los Angeles County court to change her name from Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt to Shiloh Nouvel Jolie.
In recent weeks, Shiloh publicly announced her name change in the Los Angeles Times, in compliance with California law. Under state law, adults seeking a name change must publish a written order in a newspaper four weeks before their court date, explaining their reasons.
Shiloh’s first announcement was published in the LA Times on June 17.
In a statement to People magazine, Shiloh’s attorney Peter Levine said the 18-year-old decided to change her last name “after a painful incident.”
Levin didn’t elaborate, but Shiloh’s name change comes amid a bitter legal battle between her famous parents, with Jolie alleging that Pitt physically and mentally abused her and their children. The official reason for Shiloh’s name change has not been made public.
Levin described Shiloh as “a young adult who has made independent, important decisions after a traumatic event, and is simply following the legal process.”
“Shiloh Jolie never put out an ‘ad’ or put out an inaccurate press release announcing a name change,” he clarified. “As Shiloh’s attorney, I had to post a legal notice because California law requires that anyone who changes their name be given a legal notice. That legal notice was published in the Los Angeles Times, which is a requirement.”
A hearing on Shiloh’s name change is scheduled for July 29.

Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt in 2016, but the two exes continue to feud over the Chateau Miraval winery they once owned together in the south of France.
Pitt first sued Jolie in 2022, claiming she sold her share of the winery to a Russian oligarch instead of him.
Jolie countersued, claiming that Pitt sold her share of the winery after negotiations to buy it broke down. He allegedly insisted that Jolie sign a nondisclosure agreement that “contractually prohibited her from speaking out of court about Pitt’s physical and emotional abuse of her and their children.”
The abuse allegations stem from an infamous 2016 flight on a private jet with the children. harmful The actress said a drunken Pitt grabbed her, hurled insults at her and strangled one of her children.
A few days after the flight, Jolie filed for divorce. She said Pitt’s abuse began “well before” the 2016 flight. The FBI investigated the plane crash that year, but did not bring any charges against Pitt.
Jolie and Pitt have six children: Maddox, 22, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, Shiloh, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 16.
Shiloh is the only Jolie-Pitt child to have legally petitioned to change her last name, but some have since dropped the “Pitt” name when introducing themselves publicly.
Last year, Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt celebrated her acceptance into Spelman College’s Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority by introducing herself as simply Zahara Marley Jolie.
Vivienne also appears not to use Pitt’s name publicly, and is referred to simply as Vivienne Jolie when mentioned as a co-executive producer in the show’s brochure for the Broadway musical. Outsiders. Joli is also a producer Outsiders.
