for Andrew Garfieldscript we live in time There could never have been a more perfect moment in his life.
“While reading (the script), I thought deeply about the meaning of life. As always, but it may be more pronounced in the moment.” Garfield, 41, spoke at a press conference at the San Sebastian Film Festival on Saturday, September 28. “I was thinking about life, death, love, meaning and time. … “I’m standing there at 39 and 40, facing a sort of mid-life crisis, looking forward, looking back, seeing exactly where I am, and thinking, ‘What now?’”
He added, “When this script arrived, it was as if I had written it there.” Garfield recalled having to ask himself, ‘How did I write this so well?’ I am not a writer.’”
Garfield said that if he and the playwright Nick Payne They had similar thoughts. “There must be something about these things, there must be something universal about these stories.”
we live in time Tobias (Garfield) and Almut (Florence Pugh) Learn how to cherish the moments as they come together through chance encounters, become parents, and undergo medical diagnoses.
Garfield explained Saturday that he knew he wanted to star in the film after reading scenes involving ambulances, traffic and gas station restrooms. “It felt like an Indiana Jones action sequence, which is the central action sequence of the movie,” he said.
At the press conference, Garfield was asked about framing his and Pugh’s characters as heroes. “We’re struggling with that word in our culture right now,” Garfield said.
“Anyone who has gone through something similar to what Tobias and Almut have gone through in my life would reject the idea of being heroic,” he explained. “My family and close friends who have been through the most horrible things, things that make you question whether there is justice in the universe, things that make you think, ‘What is the setting here and how does it work?’ ‘Should I continue?’ People who find a way to keep going will completely reject the idea of being heroic. “It is absolutely necessary.”
He continues, “What I love about these two people is that they express a strange, mysterious, immortal, inexplicable desire to live despite the most terrible heartache and loss. And how we, as humans, find that little spark of strength, that desire, that desire to keep living. There are probably people in this room going through things not unlike these characters, people facing death and choosing to live anyway. I think it’s amazing.”
Garfield explained that when he first read the script, he did not think of the film as a romantic drama. “I thought, ‘This is a great story about death,’” he explained. “It’s really fearless and fun. It’s trying to get at the mystery of what it means to fall in love, get married, and have kids with someone.”
