Indian police have arrested a man who killed a delivery driver after ordering an iPhone without paying the cash delivery fee.
The phone was ordered through Indian online e-commerce site Flipkart, which had previously partnered with Apple for sales promotions. In this case, it’s unclear which reseller sold the iPhone through Flipkart, but whichever reseller offered a cash on delivery (COD) option.
According to independenceThe defendant (identified only as Gajanan) and an accomplice named Akash ordered approximately $1,800 worth of iPhones. Delivery man Bharat Sahu brought the iPhone to Gajanan’s residence in Chinhat, Lucknow, north India.
“On September 23, Nishatganj’s delivery boy Bharat Sahu went to the place where he was killed by Gajanan and his accomplices to deliver a mobile phone,” senior police official Shashank Singh told reporters. I told them. “After strangling Sahu to death, he put his body in a sack and dumped it in the Indira Canal.”
The family of 30-year-old Sahu reported him missing two days later. His body has not yet been found.
Police discovered Gajanan’s phone number while reviewing Sahu’s phone records. This also led to Akash, who reportedly confessed after being interrogated.
Akash reportedly admitted to the murder but refused to give a reason. As a result, it’s unclear whether the two were trying to sell the iPhone or if they both kept it for personal use.
Also, it is not known what type of iPhone it is, but based on the reported price, it is presumed to be the iPhone 16 Pro Max. The price of this model is reportedly three times the average monthly salary of an Indian resident.
Separately, Gajanan’s hometown, Lucknow, is where an Apple sales manager was shot and killed by police in 2018.
