Amazon Prime Video has ordered a series adaptation of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Tomb Raider.
The British actress, screenwriter and producer, who won an Emmy, Golden Globe and BAFTA award for her work on Fleabag, will serve as a writer and executive producer on the TV show.
“Based on the iconic Tomb Raider video game franchise, the series follows the adventures of world-renowned archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft,” according to IP owner Embracer Group.
It is being produced by Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios and will be released exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.
“I think if you could tell your teenage self that this is happening, she would explode,” Waller-Bridge said (via Deadline). “Tomb Raider has been a huge part of my life and I am truly honored to be able to bring it to television with such passionate collaborators. Lara Croft means a lot to me, as it does to many people, and I can’t wait to go on this adventure. Bats are everything.”
As previously reported, the TV show forms part of a broader partnership between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon, which also includes plans for new movies and video games.
It was announced in December 2022 that Amazon Games will release the next Tomb Raider game.
“The as-yet-untitled game is an all-new single-player narrative-driven action-adventure that is the next chapter of Lara Croft’s legendary exploration in the Tomb Raider franchise,” Embracer said.
“Amazon MGM Studios and Amazon Games are incredible collaborators with far-reaching global reach. This allows us to expand the Tomb Raider franchise with a variety of new adventures and a shared passion for creating impactful, fun and emotional experiences for players and viewers across all aspects of the game. Scot Amos, Crystal Dynamics studio head, said:
“This timeless story is reaching audiences who want to engage with Tomb Raider across all media platforms. “This is an important step towards our future with our fans around the world.”
