Metroid fans have been waiting for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond for 20 years. The sequel was officially announced in June 2017, and Amazon began taking pre-orders shortly thereafter. These commands remained in place throughout the game’s extended development. Now, even after Metroid Prime 4 was released back last summer, Amazon is canceling longstanding pre-orders.
Perhaps this is a mistake on Amazon’s part rather than a serious issue like another delay for Metroid Prime 4 or even the cancellation of the game itself. GameSpot has reached out to Nintendo for comment. At least one GameSpot employee noted that a six-year-old Metroid Prime 4 pre-order (discounted to $48) was among the orders canceled today.
Following the initial announcement in 2017, Nintendo updated the status of Metroid Prime 4 in 2019 when it was revealed that previous development had been abandoned in favor of a new start by Retro Studios, the same studio that developed the Metroid Prime trilogy. In between the announcements, a standalone title called Metroid Dread and a remastered version of Metroid Prime were released on Switch. Both Metroid Prime 2: Echoes and Metroid Prime 3: Corruption are reportedly being remastered for the Switch.
In addition to these games, Metroid’s leading lady, Samus Aran, appears in Super Smash Bros. It remains a regular in the franchise. But if you want to stay up to date on Samus’ non-sequential adventures, you’ll probably need to review everything that’s happened in the Metroid Prime games so far. Nintendo recently reiterated that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will be released in 2025, but there is currently no exact date.
