The tagline for the original 1979 Alien movie is famous for the phrase, “In space, no one can hear you scream.” What that phrase doesn’t mention is that the Xenomorphs appear to have exceptionally good hearing, seemingly able to pick up virtually any sound onboard the ship or colony. This ability is on full display in a new preview clip for the franchise’s next film, Alien: Romulus.
The clip features Isabella Merced as Kay, one of a group of hapless young men who think it would be a good idea to collect materials from abandoned ships. In the scene, Kay is trying to get past a Xenomorph unarmed, and the alien in question appears to be actively searching for Kay and listening intently as she tries to remain as quiet as possible. It’s reminiscent of how Jane Levy’s character hid from Don Breed’s blind killer Norman Nordstrom (Stephen Lang).
Despite Kay’s best efforts, she is still caught off guard when the Xenomorphs approach and drag away two corpses. It is difficult to tell whether the bodies are from Kay’s crew or were originally stationed on the ship, which is overflowing with Facehuggers and Xenomorphs.
Kaylee Spaeny stars as Lane Carradine in the film, alongside David Johnson as Andy, Archie Renault as Tyler, Spike Fern as Bjorn, and Aileen Wu as Navarro. Don’t Breathe and Evil Dead director Fede Alvarez directed Alien: Romulus from a screenplay he co-wrote with Rodo Sayagues. The film opens August 16.
