Scrum specialist Adam Jones is set to join the Wales coaching team for this season’s Guinness Six Nations.
Jones will link up with Warren Gatland’s support staff on a secondment from Harlequins, where he has worked since 2018.
Jones made 95 caps for Wales during an 11-year international career, including a Six Nations title, a Grand Slam and three World Cups.
He also played in five Lions Tests, on the 2009 tour of South Africa and the tour of Australia four years later.
The Welsh Rugby Union said Jones, 43, will have special responsibility for the scrum and work closely with forwards coach Jonathan Humphries.
Jones is expected to report to Wales duty following Queen’s Gallagher Premiership tie against Northampton on Friday and is expected to return to his club after the Six Nations in March.
Wales begin their Six Nations campaign against France in Paris on January 31.
Meanwhile, psychology and human performance expert Andy McCann will also be involved in the Six Nations.
McCann, who worked with the Wales men’s senior team from 2009 to 2017, has returned in an advisory capacity responsible for mental capacity and performance.
Warren Gatland
Gatland said: “We are delighted to welcome Adam and Andy to the Guinness Six Nations. “I would like to thank Harlequins for allowing Adam to take advantage of this opportunity.”
“With less than two weeks until our first game against France in Paris, we will be working hard as a group to maximize our preparation and get the campaign underway.”
Jones added: “I’m looking forward to working with ‘Gats’ and ‘Humphs’, two works that have had a huge impact on my career. It all went quickly, but I’m looking forward to it.
“It will be a challenge after the Premiership. It will be my first experience coaching international rugby so there will be a learning process for me but it is a great opportunity to make an impact and help my development. As a coach.”
