Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has opened up about Abhimanyu Easwaran’s chances of playing in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. Aakash Chopra said Abhimanyu Easwaran could open the innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first Test of the five-match series in Australia.
Easwaran opened the innings for India A in two unofficial Test matches against Australia A. In the second unofficial Test in Melbourne, the right-handed batsman scored 17 runs off 31 balls in two innings. He was ejected for a three-ball duck during the first inning of the game.
Abhimanyu Easwaran is probably not ready – Aakash Chopra
In a video released on his YouTube channel, Akash Chopra said that the India A batsman failed to make an impact on the second day. Chopra pointed out that Easwaran once again featured along with other players like Sai Sudharsan, KL Rahul and Ruturaj Gaikwad.
The former Indian opener said Easwaran still has a chance to play in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy despite his poor form. However, he added that the lack of runs conceded in the unofficial series raises doubts about his readiness.
“They are out once again. In the first innings, it was 0, 4, 0, 4. Here too, no one is scoring – Abhimanyu Easwaran, Sai Sudharsan, KL Rahul, Ruturaj Gaikwad – India A are not playing well. Border-Gavaskar I feel like I am ready for the trophy,” Chopra said.
“For that, we send the players early to practice and score. If they score, we can decide to play. Abhimanyu Easwaran has no return from this unofficial match but is still likely to play. Looking at the Test match, I don’t think he is ready yet. “It seems like they are doing it,” he added.
Abhimanyu Easwaran scored just 19 runs in the first match.
Easwaran scored a total of 19 runs in two innings in the first unofficial Test against Australia A. He has been named in India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. India captain Rohit Sharma may miss the first Test scheduled in Perth on November 22 citing personal reasons.
KL Rahul finds a new way to escape – Aakash Chopra
In the same video, Akash Chopra also spoke about KL Rahul’s bizarre dismissal in the second unofficial Test against Australia A. Chopra said the way he got out in the second innings would not help him choose to open in the first Test match.
“I thought I would let KL Rahul open as Rohit might not play in the first match. So I sent KL Rahul. As soon as he arrived, he was asked to play. He was out in the first innings. That’s okay. .” Look at the way he gets outs in the second inning and tell me what new ways he finds to get outs,” Chopra said.
On day 2, the away team was struggling at 73/5 on 8 November. Wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel scored 68 runs off 122 balls, including five boundaries. The lower-order batsmen made valuable contributions as India reached a total of 229. Australia chased down the target with six wickets in hand.
