London — Musicians from ABBA, Radiohead and The Cure have joined actors and writers in signing a protest letter opposing the mining of artistry to build artificial intelligence tools.
Thousands of artists signed the letter released Tuesday. This is the latest public warning about AI tools that can spit out synthetic images, music and text after being trained on vast amounts of human-created work.
“Unauthorized use of creative works to train generative AI is a significant and unwarranted threat to the livelihoods of the people behind those works and should not be permitted,” the petition reads.
Among the signatories are Björn Ulvaeus from Swedish supergroup ABBA, The Cure’s Robert Smith, Thom Yorke and his Radiohead bandmates. Authors also signed, including Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kazuo Ishiguro and actors Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon, and Rosario Dawson.
Bestselling novelist James Patterson signed Tuesday’s letter and another open letter hosted by the Authors Guild last year, and has since filed a lawsuit against the AI company that is still pending in federal court in New York.
