Real Monarchs News Release
MORAGA, Calif. – The Real Monarchs (4-11-2, 17 points, 12th in the West) drew 1-1 with The Town FC (6-5-6, 27 points, 8th in the West) and lost 4-3 in the deciding penalty shootout.
For the first 20 minutes of the game, the Monarchs struggled to break out of their defensive third. Town FC applied the pressure and the Monarchs defenders struggled to protect their goal.
Daron Iskendarian had the first good chance of the game in the 25th minute. Owen Anderson picked up a loose ball in midfield, raced to the top of the box and found Iskendarian behind the Town defence, who played a through ball. He took a touch into the box and sent it towards goal, but the keeper saved.
Shortly after the Monarchs’ try, Town won the ball in midfield and played a through ball to the onrushing forward. Goalkeeper Fernando Delgado waited for the right moment and was off just as the Town player fired to give the home team the lead.
Both teams went for a goal with renewed purpose in the second half. Real Monarchs had the first chance through Anderson, who fired a shot that bounced off the crossbar.
Just after Anderson’s shot, The Town were awarded a corner kick after a deflected shot from the Monarch defence. The Town cleared the corner short and crossed to the far post, where the forward headed it back into the six-yard box. Alejandro Cano Salazar had the second chance to clear his header and head the ball into the back of the net.
The Monarchs found a reply goal through Anderson in the 72nd minute. His finish was almost identical to the previous one that hit the crossbar. Anderson received the ball at the top of the box, took a couple of touches, then found space to shoot, past the diving goalkeeper and into the top corner. The match ended in a draw and went to a penalty shootout.
Both teams missed one attempt on their way to the fifth round, forcing a sudden death for the final shooter. Town added another point to the home side when Zack Farnsworth’s try rattled the crossbar.
After spending their last three games on the road, the Monarchs head home to face Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on July 28 at Zions Bank Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. MT, and tickets are available at the door.
