A rare tornado struck northern Haiti, injuring more than 50 people and destroying more than 200 homes, the United Nations said Wednesday.

A tornado struck the community of Bassin-Bleu on Tuesday, displacing more than 300 families, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
The office said at least 10 people were seriously injured and local media reported they were hospitalized.
The office said Haiti’s Civil Protection Agency and the Red Cross were first responders and were assessing damage.

The Civil Protection Agency warned of the possibility of flooding and landslides as heavy rain was expected to fall in most parts of Haiti, including areas affected by tornadoes.
