There is an active petition calling on California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass to resign in relation to their handling of the Palisades fire disaster.
While outlets like TMZ report that the Newsom petition lags far behind Bass’ efforts, there is some important context to consider. The Bass petition was started three days before its author. And the requirements are much more detailed.
The Newsom petition, started by real estate investor Grant Cardone, points out a variety of issues with the governor, including his environmental record and “fringe agenda.”
There have been just over 33,000 signatures so far, calling for Newsom’s “immediate resignation.”
Cardone took to social media to ask his followers to join him in a “class action lawsuit against the state and county for neglect and incompetence.”

She failed to comfort suffering residents by holding a bizarre press conference after refusing to speak to reporters about her initial absence and the city’s lack of preparation.
The Karen Bass petition demands “a full and transparent investigation into the failures in disaster preparedness, response and resource allocation that have left our city vulnerable.”
“Los Angeles residents deserve leaders who are present, accountable, and proactive in their efforts to protect and serve our community,” he concludes. “Mayor Bass’ actions, or lack of action, have shown her to be unfit for the position she holds.”

Bass takes some responsibility for the city’s recent tragedies by cutting the fire department’s budget by more than $17 million last year to redirect funds to homeless services.
