Seize Them!” is a hilarious British comedy that combines the best of Monty Python, Horrible Histories, Blackadder and Carry On, all in one exciting adventure with a valuable message about finding your song at its core. Director Curtis Vowell delivers a smart, fast-paced film that doesn’t hold back on sword fights, lowbrow humour and unexpected friendships. The Dark Ages gives us a British comedy classic.
The film is a comedic road movie set in the Dark Ages, following the story of the self-centered ruler and ruthless Queen Dagan (Amy Lou Wood) who is unexpectedly overthrown and dethroned by the charismatic and ruthless Joan (Nicola Coughlan). As Queen Dagan embarks on her journey to reclaim her kingdom, she is joined by some unlikely allies, including her secretive former servant Sulmay (Rolly Adefop) and Bobik (Nick Frost), a shit-shoveler who ultimately wants more from life. The two allies add depth, warmth and humor to Dagan’s journey as she embarks on a journey of justice and ultimately faces every hardship and danger imaginable on her quest to reclaim her throne. She must also confront the worst parts of herself, and ultimately, if she can become queen again, will she become a better person while doing so? And what choices will she have to make?
At the heart of this adventure is the all-seeing Queen Dagan, a proud and savvy character played brilliantly by Amy Lou Wood with delightful arrogance. She comes face to face with the humble Joan, who leads a revolution, played by the charming Nicola Coughlan. But the Queen is a fugitive from her kingdom, and a huge bounty is placed on her head. The dynamic between these two heroines is electric, setting the stage for a quest filled with laughter, heartfelt moments, and surprising self-discovery.
An ensemble cast including the delightful Loli Adefope and the ever-charismatic Nick Frost add depth and nuance to the story, creating a compelling tapestry of characters that you can’t help but root for. The chemistry between the actors is infectious, making their journey from enemies to friends a joy. Also starring are some of the UK and Ireland’s best comedians, including Jessica Hines as Leofwine, Paul Kay and John McMillan as Kings Ivar and Guthrum, Jason Barnett as Thane Tostig and James Acaster as Felix the Ironmonger.
Visually, “Seize Them!” shines with detailed production design and cinematography, immersing me and my screening audience into the film’s medieval world. The practical effects and action sequences are seamlessly integrated, adding excitement to an already compelling plot.
But what really sets this film apart is its sharp, witty dialogue, reminiscent of the comedic genius of its predecessor. Written by Andy Riley, the film is fast-paced and hilarious, with clever jokes and witty wit that make “Seize Them!” a thoroughly entertaining ride from start to finish.
Overall, “Seize Them!” is a delightful mix of humor, heart, and adventure that will have you smiling from ear to ear. Whether you’re a fan of British comedy or just looking for a feel-good movie with a meaningful message, this film is sure to entertain you. So grab your chance to see this gem of comedy and get ready to be swept away on a quirky and hilarious journey through the dark ages. I applaud and rave about this film! Just make sure you’re in the safe circle when Big Liam arrives.
Seize Them! is in UK cinemas from April 5th..
