CNN commentator Van Jones on Monday went after the politicians on former Vice President Trump’s shortlist after they dodged a question about whether they would accept the results of the 2024 election.
Several candidates considered to be President Trump’s presidential candidates, including Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Senator JD Vance (Ohio), and Representative Ellis Stefanik (RN.Y.), declined to comment. Accept the results of the 2024 election. Other lawmakers, including Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), said they would reject the results outright if they determined there was fraud.
“This is like failing kindergarten,” Jones said of the comment. “When it comes to politics, you accept the results of the election and you don’t insult the integrity of the American democratic process, which is the envy of the world.”
The avoidance is a sign that potential vice presidential candidates could back false election conspiracies similar to the 2020 election fraud claims that fueled the Jan. 6 Capitol riot and are now at the center of two of Trump’s criminal cases.
“These are termites that we have unleashed on the foundations of our democracy that can later come back and bring down the whole house,” Jones said. “When there are people who no longer believe in the integrity of our elections. They are playing with fire. “They’re playing with matches, they’re playing with nitroglycerin.”
Concerns over whether Trump will repeat election fraud claims if he loses again in 2024 have also been tested among Republican leaders in the Senate.
Jones blamed the situation squarely on Trump.
“This is one of the most despicable impacts Donald Trump has had on American politics,” he said. “This kind of nonsense, in some cases, comes from decent people.”
