Renato Veiga has joined Juventus on a loan deal for the remainder of the season with no option to buy.
Anyway, my guess is that I would be very surprised if it doesn’t sell in the summer, but that’s for another article later. We’ll wait and see.
The most pressing concern for me right now is who will replace him on our team. Now there’s only one left for Marc Cucurella. Ben Chilwell is expected to be sold. Although I haven’t heard anything about him yet and with only 8 days left I have no idea where he will go. Despite this, his Chelsea career was over as they had already frozen him out and treated him like dirt.
So who plays left back when Cucurella is exhausted, injured, or just needs to be replaced?
From what we’ve heard, not much. We’ve got a shortlist of our favorite new left-backs, but that was always expected to be the one we’d be paying most attention to in the summer. Now will they fall for it? I’m not sure.
The whispers we’ve heard are that the most likely scenario for the remainder of the season now is to use Marlowe Gusteau as the left-back backup until the end of the season.
it’s okay. IF Reece James is also staying fit and healthy. Chelsea also have Ishé Samuels-Smith developing in their academy. He is an 18-year-old left-back who looks very good and could see him promoted in the second half of the season. But I would be surprised if they did this as their first backup choice. Maybe second only to Gusto.
But there’s still plenty of time left in the transfer window, and surprisingly given the fact that they seem to prioritize a new winger over everything else, I can’t predict a new left-back coming now. We look forward to hearing information from sources. But what we’re hearing most now is that Gusto will be the Cucurella backup until at least the summer. It will then be reassessed. There is a left-back we are looking at but there have been no inquiries or progress so far. Changes can be made quickly at any time if necessary.
Still, with Veiga’s deal with Juventus progressing, it feels like they could bring in Douglas Luiz. But let’s see, it’s just a feeling and he’s clearly not a left-back!
