The Steel City derby, last played in the top flight, was played on this day in 1994 and gave Sheffield bragging rights on Wednesday after a 3-1 win over bitter rivals Sheffield United.
The match was played at Hillsborough and on Wednesday manager Trevor Francis was awarded the Premier League Manager of the Month award before kick-off. Too often this becomes a curse, as a manager’s team loses the next game after receiving recognition for their efforts.
Wednesday broke the deadlock in the 58th minute. Mark Bright tapped in easily after Alan Kelly slid a shot right into his path.
Defender Andy Pearce doubled the home side’s lead with a bullet header from an Andy Sinton corner. Gordon Watson then added a third goal after taking in a great goal kick from Kevin Pressman.
Dane Whitehouse scored in the 87th minute to cheer United fans, but it was too late and the majority of the crowd of 34,959 left Hillsborough jubilant.
