“My mom said the classroom and everything in it burned down before we could play,” said second-grader Lucy Van Voorhis. “I’m really sad because I loved that school.”
Like famous singer Aloe Blacc, parents of students at the now-devastated private Pasadena Waldorf School are looking for a solution. He hopes the school, which has been closed for 20 years, will be able to lend its space for learning.
“Parents and staff alike are looking for positions,” Blacc said.
Amid the wildfires, Blacc said she felt helpless: “I couldn’t stop the fires from happening. I couldn’t save my children from this experience.”
But he added that the situation gave him a new perspective.
“Is this an opportunity for our children to learn what leadership looks like? What does community look like? What does heroism look like?”
While parents struggle to break news about home or school to their children, teacher Blair Manzke reminds everyone what’s most important.
“The buildings and things are gone, but the actual Pasadena Waldorf School is not gone. It may be hard to understand now, but it’s us, the students, the teachers, the parents, and everyone who helps us that makes the school what it is,” she said. .

School reopens amid fire
