17 years ago today, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced the MacBook Air at the Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco, captivating audiences with its groundbreaking design that set a new industry standard.
Jobs famously unveiled the MacBook Air by pulling it out of an office envelope to emphasize its unusually slim profile. The original model had a sleek aluminum unibody design with a 13.3-inch display, an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, and an optional 64GB solid-state drive, a rarity in consumer laptops in 2008. It lacked features considered standard at the time, such as an optical drive and an Ethernet port. A single headphone, USB, and Micro-DVI port protrude from a small door on the right side of the device. Jobs said:
We created the world’s thinnest laptop without sacrificing a full-size keyboard or full-size 13-inch display. When you first look at the MacBook Air, it’s hard to believe that it’s a high-performance laptop with a full-size keyboard and display. But yes.
Now, 17 years later, the ‌MacBook Air‌ remains a cornerstone of the Mac lineup and provides an entry point for customers looking for an Apple laptop. In 2020, Apple introduced its own custom silicon processor in the form of the M1 chip to the ‌MacBook Air‌, significantly improving performance and energy efficiency. The device was completely redesigned in 2022, and a 15-inch model was added in 2024. Apple is expected to introduce the latest generation of M-series chips to its devices in the first half of this year.
